In February 1956, the authorities of the St Mary’s Joint Hospital, Amaigbo, applied to the Nigerian Nursing Board to start the training school for nurses. All the requirements were fulfilled, and approval came in 1957. As a result of the destruction of the St Mary’s Joint Hospital at the end of the civil war, and the loss of all the expatriate staff, the School of Nursing was closed down.

The Amaigbo Town Union again rallied, raising funds from the community and beyond and contributed to the rehabilitation of the School of Nursing. An application was then written to the Nursing Council of Nigeria and following an inspection, the school was reopened in 1979, nine years after the war ended. Since then, the Amaigbo Town Union has continued to contribute to the sustenance of the nursing school.
